"Thursday" - Asobi Seksu

Asobi Seksu is one of my favorite indie bands out there (and probably of all time) because of their unique and original vocals and lyrics to back up Yuki Chikudate's great voice. Not only that, they have successfully created their own special identity through their music style.

Thursday is another modern love song of love eventually lost.

I dunno that made me sound kind of poetic huh? Haha anyways this song really holds onto me and it's perfect for a good day on the slopes.

Eco-nomy (snowboard design)

My latest creation, aptly named the Eco-nomy. Inspired by and based on the simple beauty of nature.

I thought it was time for a chill, plain white pow board, and so here's my rendering of what my ultimate pow board would look like.

The only thing I wish I should've done was making the base either dark purple or aqua blue, instead of pink, but hey, each size could have their own different base.

Hopefully, I'll get a job as a snowboard designer when I'm older. Even if I don't, drawing is really fun and enough to keep me occupied.

It's time for some super duper Asian steez up in this crib. But seriously, these guys are killing it and it's awesome seeing fellow Asians stomping such technical moves, not to mention the steez.

This is kind of where I hope to be in a few years when I'm older, except less jibbing and more pow jumps/riding. Wish me luck.

While there might not be enough pow for my taste, you can tell these guys reall love what they do, and how it carries on through their life. Actually, it's more like snowboarding makes up their life, which keeps with the fact that snowboarding isn't simply a sport, but a lifestyle. And the steez shows.

It's been a while huh? Well, it's time for a revival (even though it's only been a week or so).

As I am still in my awkward (uh, what?) teen years, I feel like there has to be at least something I can strive for to make a living off of, and since pro snowboarder isn't really in my grasps (for now), I want to support the snowboarding community and so sometimes in my free time, I draw.

I would really like to see more construction being done because so far it's looking pretty rough, but this is kind of a way of saying, "Hey, we're still here, and things are moving forward."

So please, take the time (which is like a minute anyways) to vote on the new logo for the snowflex park, which will open sometime between 2010 and 2011. Personally, I liked the last one the best, because of its clean, official feel, but it's all up to you.

Factor Films - "They Came From..."

Wow.

They Came From... looks amazing. Insane riding and insane riders like Mr. Norweigian Torstein Horgmo fill up this movie with heavy hitters and huge tricks.

Where did these guys come from? There is no way that skill is human. I'm guessing Europe, or Antartica, or Mars. Back on track, it doesn't matter. These guys are killing it and everything around it.

Vaca Films - "So Much to Say"

North Lake Tahoe REPRESENT! Another Tahoe based film, with some exceptional filming. I have to say, this is one of the better teasers I have seen this year.

It's got it all: powder, jibs, bonks, backcountry booters, and other assorted wacky fun obstacles. There's plenty of good times to be had in this film, that's for sure.

As a Tahoe rider, it's always a pleasure to see something locals throw together to show their stoke for lake 'hoe. No big brands showing off their big talents, and no big film company feel. It's the perfect combination of feel-good riding and hype.

There's so much I could say about how incredibly good their riding is and how awesome it is that they're keeping the shreddy times alive and well. But I'm going to let you see for yourself. Enjoy.

This is It.

This is it. I've been in denial for far too long, because I don't want to ever face the truth. But this time, I have to accept it, grieve, and move on. It's really the end of the season.

Here comes the depression. The shoot me now, or send me to New Zealand phase. The endless slaving over snowboard trailers and films and constantly checking calendars for opening dates, then breaking down and having a dude orgasm because the Sierra's are naked and bare.

Snowboarding is a privilege. We should never take that for granted, because Mother Nature and the fine folks at snowboard companies work hard to make our short seasons work. Plus, all good things must end.

This is it. This is Squaw's last day of riding. Enjoy it while you can.

We're Having Fun in the Slush at... Squaw?

This is just so tight like g-strings and awesomer than uber awesome gets. Squaw Valley is still open and running (well) for sweating, I mean shredding.

The sun is out, and it's a cool 60 degrees up at Tahoe. While every Tahoe resort (Mammoth not included, however they will be open as well through memorial day) has shut down their mountains, Squaw has really treated their riders right and has kept the lifts open despite the ever increasing slush. And why not? With so much snow still leftover from winter there's no point in closing down.

Maybe it's the economical shitfest, maybe they're just lazy, or maybe the snow on the mountains actually is thinning. All I know is that I've checked other resorts in the Tahoe area and most of them have a reasonable amount of snow to open a few lifts here and there. But, sadly, they are no longer in business for this season and so my only open window (of opportunity) is Squaw (once again, leaving out Mammoth).

I want to go shredding badly. I mean, very, very, very, very, cherry, very badly. Knowing that my parents have spent enough of their time this season on me my days of shredding are over (until November). But it's still keeping the stoke alive in me that Squaw is up and running. I guess you could call me obsessive. ^-^

Our favorite down and gritty team is back with a whole new film this year. Last year's flick was pretty awesome, especially with Keegan's kick ass part.

I remember watching this earlier in the season and was like, woah, they... haven't really changed. But that's a good thing, because they've got great style and a more than enthusiastic group.

Play Big Productions - Hot Laps

Thanks again to theangrysnowboarder for uploading this onto his blog first.

Usually, I only take interest in film crews I know of or have watched before. But, somehow, I've never heard of this crew, and what I found from them was simply awesome. They're really keeping the stoke alive, with a real skate/snow feel that demonstrates riding as it is: plain, cooky fun (if I do say so myself).

Something that really caught my attention was that the footage was all filmed from and around Mammoth Mountain, which I have ridden on and had the time of my life doing hot laps Thanksgiving of 2007. Their terrain parks and overall mountain has some of the best stuff I could possibly find to do shit on.

It's really great to see talented locals who are "super star" pros tone it down and film for their home mountains. It kinda feels like their paying their respects to the mountains where they became famous. Now, they're taking the swingshot back and demoing their own mountains. They're adults returning to their old playgrounds.

And Mammoth is a very, very fine playground.

Okay I Have to Spill Something Really Quick - 2009 films

I needed to clear something up to the few viewers who actually read my blog. This is probably the perfect example of coincidence because my previous post directly relates to this one.

Did you know that, as of this post, we are in 2009? And I know that snowboard films will be dropping later this year (that's 2009, folks), this fall (still 2009), sometime around September/October (in 2009!).

So why is it that people are refering to the 2008/2009 footage as 2010 films? Oh I'm sorry, I didn't realize your time machine in your back pocket. How silly of me. Or how silly of you (even if it wasn't your fault you left your time machine running)? I have to say, 2009/2010 snowboard previews are sick and aptly named because they are boards that will be in use for that season. So will 2009 snowboard flicks, but the difference is, that stoke captured is from the 2008/2009, and should be mentioned in that season.

That's why if you click on the 2009 snowboard trailers, you'll find a collection of "2010" films.

The End Of the World as We Know It

Or, at least, as I know it. It's the beginning of the Great, Hot Depression. It's the end of the snowboarding season.

This is the saddest time of the year for me. Really! It is! And it's just the tip of the iceberg as I slowly flubber around the melting ice evaporating into summer. You know, I like to snowboard, and I like my cold weather. Hot weather is, well, bringing me under the weather (haha, see what I did there? *nudge nudge*). All puns aside, I will begin to express my grief of the ending season.

It all starts with a trip to the webcams. I get up, and it's May. That hit my so hard. I've spent well over all of last summer and fall's time contemplating and obsessing over the next season. And that season is over. This is it, this is now, that is in the past. Another year, gone.

Meanwhile, all I can do is immerse myself in 2009 snowboard flicks and skate around pretending I'm a hobo, because that's what the asscannons want to think. Oh yeah, and there's this blogging shit, and rhythm games (I simply have to post about that soon). Lots of options, little compensation for the time lost.

Time is a valuable thing. Watch it fly by as the pendulum swings. Watch as I plagarize Linkin Park on this here blog. They had it right, but it never hit me with a hammer until this year. And I think it started with this amazing book I read, "If You Come Softly," (check it out, it's a great read) because, lets face it, its name has good love appeal. But it really made me think how important it was that I spend all my time wisely and never ruin a single moment. It was a senior-aged thought. I was in high school.

Interesting as anything was the swing-a-round. I started as a snowboarder who couldn't wait for time to pass, and now I'm sitting here thinking about the time that's gone and spent. And time never stops spending, I'll always have an out of control drama queen teenager (so to speak) governing my moments spent on Earth. So I'll be dreaming, and waiting, and watching, and playing as time flies right by and sits just out of reach.

In other words Think Thank is known to step outside of the box, or waaaay out of the box, which makes for great films that are fun as hell to watch. I always try to check out their trailers each year and their films are getting better than ever. This year, they're back with a highly promising film and a pretty cool plot sorta thing.

On a Lighter Side - Terms I Like to Say.

Butter: To tail or nose press on a snowboard and spin at the same time is called a butter. Used in context with the ever popular phrase "buttering the muffin," which means buttering some obstacle (or a slope I guess), preferrable a natural snow boob. Not to be confused with my Negro friend's favorite saying "I'm gonna butter up dem biscuits and sweet buns" which means he's horny.

Steez, steezy, steez machine: One of my favorite words, it refers to a person's style on a snowboard: how they can make snowboarding look. I like to use it to describe tumbling gapers. They have extreme levels of steez.

Ga(y)pers: The guy who sits on a box or rail because he thinks it's a bench or thinks you're on cocaine because the "powder is tight." In other words the beginner on the slope with a serious forehead burn.

Shredding: I only use this term to refer to pow, because I TEAR THAT SHIT UP!

American High Schools are Moldy Shits

Okay, between the ever popular cops vs. skaters war, dealing with angry asscannons at spots, and the swine flu from the South of the Border, I have to attend the pile of dirtyness which is the American High School.

I've got nothing agaisnt spending my time there. I've got nothing agaisnt my friends and other people I come into contact with. I've got nothing agaisnt learning. I'm all eyes and ears.

Nevertheless, I think American high schools are pieces of junk. Especially in places like California where the school board thinks that they can stuff 35+ students into one classroom. But it's more than that, there's so much more going on at these schools that haunts me.

The way I see it, there's a raging whirlpool. The whirlpool grows larger and larger as more students and teachers are sucked into it. It feeds on students, it grows on power. It's like this:
Teens are forced into school to learn. There they are taught in a "nurturing" environment. Things and phrases that are supposed to make you feel special and good starting from a young age. Well what about when you're a teenager? You're sick of this shit, so you rebel. Now the rebels get disciplinary punishment, which is, skipping school for a week or so, and forging a signature on a referral. The rebels come back, fired up more than ever to cause wrongdoings. They'll make jokes and demand as much attention as possible because they're missing that at home. They don't care enough about the world, because their world doesn't care enough about them. And you know what teachers and staff do? They complain. Every day, each day, that these kids are bad, will never be role models, and we must separate them from the "good" crowd. Day in and day out this is what I see.

If someone could just sit down and have a talk with these kids, maybe they could've turned out a little bit better. Maybe they could've cared about their future.

Why don't teachers care? How about this: take a crummy, low paying job, add being bossed around by people who know nothing at all about school life, and sprinkle on a touch of rebellion. Then, take away the respect that the public used to give to teachers. Plus, take the fact that most of the school board, who runs the schools, have never taught nor have been involved in some kind of school management, and throw around budget cuts like confetti. I would feel bad too, but I have no right to say whether or not I would be the savior teacher. After all, I am not a teacher.

Every once in a while I'll get teachers like my 8th grade history teacher who will buckle up and help you out. People like him are miracles. People like him care.

As more and more teens are sucked into this lost whirlpool, other's expectations keep dropping, so students expectations drop. What's going to be left if this goes on? Certainly not something productive.

I may be writing an opinion, but it is an opinion that is based on facts.

Burton 2010 Preview (plus a really cool site)

Ah, hate 'em or love 'em, that's the nature of Burton snowboards. Some say they are too much corporate and not enough of a rider's company. I have to agree with that. While I disagree with the way they handle their company and the way they treat they're employees and athletes like strict shit, I have to say they're boards are pretty well made.

Some of them are anyways. I used to love this company. They started the sport of snowboarding (well.. co-founded) and Jake Burton was such a cool dude. The boards did their job and the graphics were tight as XXS shorts.

They got me into snowboarding, and my first board ever was a Burton (punch, 140, 2006 model, I think). Before that, it was the dreaded renting for like... 4 years. Yessir I have to say some of their boards are great and spot on, like the Burton Hero.

I've heard only rave reviews about it (with some issues about the pop...) that this snowboard will play more than a playboy bunny and hold stable at high speeds suprisingly well for a new-fangled (or blast from the past) rocker. This is the board I want and will buy this fall at the bay area snow show. So while drooling over it and obsessively hugging it in my mind, I stumbled upon this really awesome site on google that has images of all the 2010 burton boards, top and bottom.

The only downside is that it's mostly in Japanese, but the links (link descriptions that show up at the bottom) are all in English, so you can navigate semi-successfully throughout the site. This website is really cool, and I advise all of you who actually read this post to go check it out.

Sandbox - Shine On

I've seen one or two Sandbox films during the apres at the lake of Tahoe. They're really great and I think they capture the essence of snowboarding very well. While they're filming might come a little under par when compared to amazing film crews like Isenseven, they're films always have an aspect of fun involved that really gets me hyped up to shred some powpow.

Ming & Ping - Beautiful Things

This band is, hands down, my favorite band of all time. They, in my opinion, are revolutionizing the synthpop genre, making music I describe as indie electronic modern synthpop goodygoodness.

What makes them so great? Amazing tunes, with perfect beats and awesome synth lines that anyone can dance to. A unique style that is universal yet all their own. But what really sets them apart in my opinion are their lyrics. They are meaningful, thoughtful, and are not meant to be catchy, but often are anyways. The subjects they expand upon include social inequality, man vs. world, and really the darker side of life. This is true music right here.

Have a listen. Who knows, it might turn out to be your favorite song of all time like me.

Donkey Basketball. Says it all.

Recently, my school's FFA chapter hosted a donkey basketball game featuring staff vs. students riding jackasses of the donkey persuasion. This was a fundraising event to help us raise money for the FFA, an agriculture program for young adults that spans across the whole nation. With it, we get hands on experience, albeit, not much, but enough, to learn about our state's number 1 industry: agriculture.

It's an interesting program, except for the fact that we have to do some extra projects and pretty much bribe us for good grades (participating in events such as these are worth 10% of my overall grade).

Anywho, check out the wacky good fun smashing time these asses are having while riding donkeys. Don't worry, the asses get hurt a lot more than the actual donkeys.

Final score: 30-26, students win!

Morgan Hill Snowflex Center gets Yet Another Sponsor!

This time, it's from a bigger company with some serious props: Sessions. I've seen their factory driving by to Scotts Valley (chill little town by the way) and I love their protective gear (when I actually wear any). It's super duper great that companies are taking an interest in our quaint little snowflex center. No doubt if this miracle pays off, it's gonna be huge and it's gonna be popular.

Next week they'll be spreading the love and enjoying some air time on the news as well as on the radio. Why do People Have to be Mean?

Yet another question to start off my blogging. Okay, I admit, I can be mean sometimes, with all my practical joking and exploding whoopie-cushions and whatnot. But I'm not an asscannon who fires assiles at unsuspecting citizens. I'm... not quite sure what that means either.

I am fed up with this pre-conception that all snowboarders and skateboarders are bad. I am fed up with cops, fed up with laws agaisnt skateboarding and snowboarding when there are people being KILLED by mass serial murderers, and fed up with angry asscannon poopoo.

You know, skateboarding was never meant to cause any harm. So why is it that skateboarders and snowboarders alike are being pushed out of the streets. I've been kicked onto the street for skateboarding at PUBLIC parks, and I've been kicked out of the streets that I try to skateboard on. What's left? Crowded skateparks where pads are "required?" Private property? It's like cops are asking for a riot. Well I'm going to speak my mind.

Obviously some spots are private property, such as the staircase leading to a home, or a ledge clearly part of a home's landscaping. Other spots, not so much. A secluded rail in the back of an alley. A tree bonk at a local park. Sewage banks, that's right, even sewage banks are under fire from asscannons and cops. It's perfectly acceptable to walk on these places. Why not skate or snowboard them? Are they really that much of a use to society, or are these people just being arrogant?

Who knew that riding a plank of wood (and fiberglass, urethane, whatever they put into it) could cause so much trouble? Whether on snow or cement, it spells disaster, right? Think about it for a minute. Riding a plank of wood, on snow or cement = harm to society? I don't think not, I know not. Stop with the bullshit, skaters and snowboarders are people too.

Transworld Snowboarding - Get Real

Dropping in the fall of 2009, a.k.a. this fall. Transworld, hrmmm, seems good, I don't know what to expect though. I really haven't seen much of their films, except Eero Ettala's part from White Balance.

Morgan Hill Snowflex gets sponsored???

By a watch company??? Well, this increases the chance of the morgan hill (please don't say mo'hill, mohill, mohilla, mohumpalot or whatever the hell people from out of town use to abbreviate the name) snowflex center becoming a reality instead of a dream machine.

The more sponsors, the more people involved, the more the costs is divided up, the cheaper it'll be for the construction company (I think it's called Leading Edge Slope Developement) and the faster and more efficently the place will be built. I'm really looking forward to this and super excited that something like this is coming to my hometown.

I Heart Music

I love music. It's otherworldly. It's not physical or adrenaline appeal. It's not something you see or feel. It's the part of our senses we take the most for granted.

Music is amazing. I don't have to look at it to see it's beauty. I don't have to touch it to be entertained. It surrounds me, captivates me, enthralls and motivates my mind and my soul. It pumps me up to go boarding or skating and everything else I like to do. It's the crashing ocean, it's the crickets under the stars.

Maybe I'll end up posting my favorite songs to share with the world. Hey, I might just put up my own songs if I feel like it.

Morgan Hill Snowflex Center

Oh my jumpin' jolly god I can't believe it. A snowflex center, the first of it's kind in California, in my own hometown! On top of that, it's like... 5 miles from my house, maybe even less. Boy, sometimes life is great.

Basically, it's an artificial ski-slope stretching around 600-700 feet in length make of the stuff of wonder: Snowflex. This is great stuff (not revolutionary, like real snow is) that will enable us to snowboard or ski all year round. It's an artificial turf like substance that rolls out like carpet and rides like groomers. Never melting, never freezing, but.. never interesting.

Don't get me wrong, I am stoked TO THE MAX (lolface) about this center. I'll get to ride every day after school and weekends for sure. But it makes me ponder if we're becoming too artificial here. The best part of this center is knowing that there's real snow waiting for you somewhere in the mountains. Remember folks, no helping the environment = no more snow.

While it'll never beat powder, it might just beat shredding paper - as in, global warming and what-not. So recycle a little, play a little, and enjoy mother nature the very chance you get to, or you'll never get that time back.

Time to Talk About Nothing

It's that time of the day again, when the sun wakes up and puts on his shoes and coat and goes out to illuminate the world without anything in return. Now the shredding season's over, and I can't get the steeeeez that I so desperately neeeeed. I mean, really, I love snowboarding, but I only get to go around 15 days a year, maybe 20, if I'm lucky. But I'm here, and I'm talking, for the curious internet adventurer and myself.

So lets talk. I like junk food. Love it, everything about it. I'll have junk food any day compared to a mediocre trip out to a restaurant. But I love great food as well. Not necessarily fancy, but food where people take the time to grow it and prepare it; food where people put their soul into it. And somewhere in between is the generic, the mediocre, the food made because it brings home the dough. There's too much of the average, too little of the good stuff.

I guess I'm at opposite ends of the spectrum: the live fast, and the live well. And I will never want to be conglomerated with the average and the ordinary. But I see how many people live on this Earth every flight I take into the sky. It motivates me more to be different: to be myself. That's what snowboarding accomplishes for me.

Never waste time.

How would we live without snowboarding?

I spend so much time simply browsing snowboards that it makes me wonder what my life would be like without snowboarding?

Snowboarding really is a lifestyle, and I'm glad we don't take it seriously.

Indeed, Isenseven has done it again with yet another brain blasting rolicking good time movie. Prepare yourself for a visual explosion. I would have to say Isenseven is my favorite snowboarding films crew and all of their works are masterpieces. This will probably be the only film I will buy this season due to the tough economy.

In other words, getting lost ain't so bad after all.
